Humidifier disinfectant-associated lung injury in adults: Prognostic factors in predicting short-term outcome

Abstract: • Young age, peripartum and low O saturation were associated with ICU admission. • Consolidation, pneumomediastinum and pulmonary interstitial emphysema were short-term prognostic CT findings. • Consolidation and ground-glass opacity disappeared within 3 months and replaced by centrilobular nodules. • Radiologic findings are related to the outcome of humidifier disinfectant-associated lung injury.

“…In previous studies, exudates ll the alveolar air space as well as the peribronchial bro-in ammatory lesions in both early and chronic stages in pediatric patients [25]. In adult patients, extensive brosis was also noted in the chronic stage [5]. However, in the previous study, they did not analyze pathologic ndings which correlated with CT ndings in all patients.…”

“…In previous studies, chest CT analysis and pathologic correlations of humidi er disinfectant-associated lung disease were performed in both children and adults [4,5]. However, in these studies, only patients who had rapidly progressive respiratory distress for several days or weeks were included.…”

“…As of 2016, a total of six case series reports detailing the clinical, radiological and pathological patterns of lung injury and its prognosis have been published [6-11]. Five epidemiological studies generating estimates on the association of lung injury with HDs have been published (Table 1) [12-16].…”

“…and E.J.C.) reviewed all HRCT images at the lung (window width, 1,500 Hounsfield unit [HU]; level, −700 HU) and mediastinal window (width, 450 HU; level, 50 HU) settings (5). The consolidation extent, ground-glass opacity, and centrilobular nodules were categorized in 10th-percentile intervals (Fig.…”
