“…Postnatal jaundice rates were high in the cohort. Although shoulder dystocia is often cited as a major risk factor of neonatal jaundice, none of the cases of shoulder dystocia in the cohort resulted in a case of neonatal jaundice (4e6, 45,46). In fact, 1 in 10 babies born by elective cesarean section had postnatal jaundice.…”

“…In fact, 1 in 10 babies born by elective cesarean section had postnatal jaundice. These rates may instead reflect the predisposition of babies exposed to diabetes in utero to various metabolic abnormalities (4e6, 45,46). Neonatal jaundice often results in longer hospital stays and increased costs, particularly for the northern families who are not candidates for outpatient phototherapy because of their distance from a major city.…”

“…However, currently it is not clear if the delivery mode is associated with hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy [6]. While some studies found a higher risk for hyperbilirubinemia with vaginal delivery [18] in contrast other studies showed an increased risk with caesarean section [17].…”
