Significance of Ischemia-Modified Albumin as a Simple Measure of Oxidative Stress and Its Discriminatory Ability in Diabetic Retinopathy

Abstract: Serum IMA may be useful as a simple marker in monitoring of oxidative stress status in DRP and showed significant discriminatory ability in DRP. Future comparative studies in large are needed to further investigate IMA in different types of DRP; proliferative and nonproliferative.

“…Under oxidative stress, IMA is formed when oxidative stress to the aminoterminal of HSA occurs within hours of reperfusion; IMA levels return to normal. Recent research has discovered elevated levels of IMA, a sensitive marker in several oxidative stress-related conditions such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, renal disease, and endocrine disorders (28)(29)(30)(31). We also assessed the importance of IMA in FN.…”

“…High levels of ischemia modified albumin (IMA) clearly predicted bumin was found in different conditions while evaluating for ischemic heart disease including cholecystitis, pericarditis, pancreatitis, stroke, seizures and pulmonary thromboembolic phenomena. 20,21,22,23,24,25,26 Ischemia modified albumin may thus be used as a surrogate marker in those conditions but more prospective detailed studies are required in the future. It can be utilized as a rule out test rather than rule in test due to high negative predictive value along with electrocardiogram (EKG) and troponin (cTnT) to increase sensitivity and specificity.…”

“…Previous studies have been able to evaluate the development of DRP, diabetes, blood glucose level, and hemoglobin A 1c (HbA1c) but failed to associate them with tissue ischemia [22,24]. With the increasing prevalence of diabetic retinopathy and the lack of biomarker testing modalities that contribute to earlier diagnosis, finding new diagnosis markers with good reproducibility and low cost would be a possible solution to halt the development of DRP that currently has no effective treatment [25,26].…”

“…IMA is considered a novel, highly reproducible, and low-cost test that can further determine microvascular ischemic OXS in the early stage to prevent retinal complications. IMA is also associated with identifying the duration of increased glucose levels and glycosylated haemoglobin [24, 25,29,33,34].…”
