Comparison of the GlideScope and the McGrath method using vascular forceps and a tube exchanger in cases of simulated difficult airway intubation

Abstract: BackgroundA "difficult airway" can be simulated with an extrication collar, which restricts cervical motion and mouth opening. The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of the GlideScope and the McGrath in difficult airway simulation.MethodsPatients were randomized using computer-generated numbers and were placed into the GlideScope group or the McGrath group. The total intubation time was defined as the time measured from when the anesthesiologist picks up the device to the time at which three succ… Show more

“…Although there was no significant difference in this paediatric study with normal airway, the success rate on intubation with McGrath VL can be anticipated to increase if the sample size of enrolled children increases or if the enrolled children have difficult airway (e.g. neck restriction) …”

“…The Korean Journal of Anesthesiology has thus far published several papers using survival analysis for clinical outcomes: a comparison of 90-day survival rate for pressure ulcer development or non-development after surgery under general anesthesia [ 3 ], a comparison of postoperative 5-year recurrence rate in patients with breast cancer depending on the type of anesthetic agent used [ 4 ], and a comparison of airway intubation success rate and intubation time between two types of video laryngoscopy in difficult intubation cases [ 5 ]. It is not hard to consider the application of survival analysis for the data of first two articles, using survival analysis for the intubation time comparison in the third paper is not easy to think.…”

“…In contrast, in patients under conscious sedation, the fibreoptic bronchoscope enters the airway along the GVL blade according to adjustments of its positional camera. In other studies, 2 , 11 the angle of the vascular forceps was similar to that of the GVL blade, and the tube exchanger served as a guide for introducing the endotracheal tube. Ultimately, endotracheal intubation was effective using the vascular forceps along with the tube exchanger.…”
