Skull Base Meningiomas and Cranial Nerves Contrast Using Sodium Fluorescein: A New Application of an Old Tool

Abstract: Objective? The identification of cranial nerves is one of the most challenging goals in the dissection of skull base meningiomas. The authors present an application of sodium fluorescein (SF) in skull base meningiomas with the purpose of improving the identification of cranial nerves. Design?A prospective study within-subjects design. Setting?Hospital Ernesto Dornelles, Porto Alegre, Brazil. Participants?Patients with skull base meningiomas. Main Outcomes Measures?Cranial nerve identification. Results? The … Show more

“…Despite this, there are numerous series that have considered the application of modern skull base techniques, fluorescent markers, transoperative imaging, and neuronavigational systems that have reported high rates of complete removal of skull base meningiomas and low morbidity rates. “…In July 2015, based upon preliminary scientific results from different studies published in the international literature (34, 36, 37), including a prospective phase II trial from our group (32, 33, 38, 4346) the Italian Medicine Agency (AIFA) has extended the indications for the utilization of fluorescein molecule (determination 905/2015, Gazette n.168, 22 July, 2015; http://www.gazzettaufficiale.it/atto/serie_generale/caricaDettaglioAtto/originario;jsessionid=izVcTOmnjOzfNRjjw56kAA__.ntc-as2-guri2b?atto.dataPubblicazioneGazzetta=2015-07-22&atto.codiceRedazionale=15A05620&elenco30giorni=false). “…One of the proposed techniques to facilitate resection is intraoperative fluorescence-guided imaging. Several fluorescent dyes (5-aminolevulinic acid, fluorescein, and indocyanine green) have been tried [ 1 , 10 , 14 , 25 , 33 ]; however, evidence regarding the benefit of applying these dyes is unavailable. Furthermore, fluorescent dyes currently lack specificity.…”
