Quantification of chemical contaminants in the paper and board fractions of municipal solid waste

Abstract: Chemicals are used in materials as additives in order to improve the performance of the material or the production process itself. The presence of these chemicals in recyclable waste materials may potentially affect the recyclability of the materials. The addition of chemicals may vary depending on the production technology or the potential end-use of the material. Paper has been previously shown to potentially contain a large variety of chemicals. Quantitative data on the presence of chemicals in paper are ne… Show more

“…The paper and cardboard waste fractions were also subject to further investigations of organic pollutants (not included in this article). For this purpose paper and cardboard was sorted into 30 different material fractions (Pivnenko et al, 2016). To better serve the purpose of this article, only aggregated results for eight material fractions are presented and discussed.…”

“…They are therefore also found in card-board boxes. If these are used for the packaging of foodstuffs, there is a risk of migration of the oils into the respective foodstuffs [35]. • When dismantling buildings, numerous materials can be obtained separately from each other; however, it is not possible to remove used pigments from broken concrete, wallpaper, wall debris, etc.…”

“…Paper being a composite of fiber and chemicals is a precursor in that its by-products deserve an assiduous disposal approach [32,33]. Waste paper particularly can either be recycled, burnt, or buried.…”
