Skin Infection due to Trichophyton tonsurans Still Occurs in People in Korea but not as Outbreaks

Abstract: Since 1995, Trichophyton tonsurans has been one of the causative agents of dermatophytosis in Korea. Herein we evaluate 77 patients infected with T. tonsurans who visited an outpatient clinic between 2004 and 2014. Infections due to T. tonsurans were diagnosed by mycological examination, which included direct microscopic examination using 15% KOH and culture in potato dextrose agar complemented with 0.5% chloramphenicol. The annual prevalence of infection due to T. tonsurans was the highest in 2014 (15 cases) … Show more

“…T. tonsurans , M. canis , T. rubrum and T. interdigitale were identified as the aetiological agents using a molecular method which was similar to the one employed in a molecular epidemiological study of dermatophytosis conducted by Dogen et al Similarly, in previous studies, T. tonsurans has been reported as the most common aetiological agents of tinea gladiatorum . The reasons for the predominant causative nature of this species may include high durability to very low temperature, ability to survive under dry conditions and the anthropophilic nature of T. tonsurans arthrospores . In the present study, the only type of hair invasion was endothrix by T. tonsurans , whereas no cases of ectothrix and favic infections were observed.…”

“…Public health care and improved environmental conditions might lead to a decrease in the incidence of tinea capitis caused by T. verrucosum. Trichophyton tonsurans is a frequent cause of tinea capitis in teenagers, especially gladiators, such as judo players and wrestlers 13 . Although tinea capitis caused by T. tonsurans has spread to non-gladiators since 2000, it is still not common causative agent in adults.…”

“…Dentro del género Trichophyton, T. rubrum es el más frecuente en las distintas dermatofitosis reportadas en la mayoría de los países, incluido Chile; no obstante, T. tonsurans se considera un agente emergente en varias regiones del mundo 6,7,13 . En América del Sur se ha descrito la circulación de este agente en varios de los países, tanto en dermatofitosis de niños como en adultos 7, [14][15][16] .…”
