Economic Estimation of the Losses Caused by Surface Water Pollution Accidents in China From the Perspective of Water Bodies’ Functions

Abstract: The number of surface water pollution accidents (abbreviated as SWPAs) has increased substantially in China in recent years. Estimation of economic losses due to SWPAs has been one of the focuses in China and is mentioned many times in the Environmental Protection Law of China promulgated in 2014. From the perspective of water bodies’ functions, pollution accident damages can be divided into eight types: damage to human health, water supply suspension, fishery, recreational functions, biological diversity, env… Show more

“…Water-quality impairment by fecal pollution in surface freshwater and seawater has adverse effects on the beneficial uses of these waters. Contaminated enteric pathogens can increase public health risks by causing illness and death and can also have an economic impact via, for example, beach closure, water supply suspension, and water-quality restoration. , Preventing or reducing fecal discharge into impaired water bodies is a practical approach for water-quality improvement. Whereas point sources, for example, discharge outlets, are easily discernible, nonpoint or diffuse sources, such as runoff from rainfall or snowmelt, are more challenging to identify.…”

“…Surface water pollution with nitrogen and phosphorus has increased in many regions worldwide ( Yao, You & Liu, 2016 ; Wang et al, 2019 ). Most strategies developed to manage this eutrophication have focused on limiting nutrient loading to receiving waters; however, phytoremediation also shows promise ( Guittonny-Philippe et al, 2014 ; Ning et al, 2014 ; Li et al, 2018 ).…”
