Decline in sperm count and motility in young adult men from 2003 to 2013: observations from a U.S. sperm bank

Abstract: SUMMARYControversy exists regarding stability of semen quality over time with papers reporting decrease, increase or stable parameters in heterogeneous populations. The current study examined semen parameters of young adult men from 2003 to 2013 at an urban U.S. sperm bank. Semen parameters were analyzed before and after cryopreservation for a total of 9425 specimens from 489 individuals. Demographic information was obtained from a social and medical history questionnaire. Following 2-3 days abstinence, the sp… Show more

“…This suggests that the toxicity of NH 4 CL and/or Na 2 S treatments (used in current investigation) might be not very high just that spermatozoa motility was declined while the spermatozoa survival was not impaired. This phenomenon was also found by the epidemiology studies12345.…”

“…The transwomen sperm bankers were significantly younger than the cismen sperm bankers, but the majority were adults, so we expected normal semen parameters (Centola et al , 2016). This may point to unreported hormonal therapy or some inherent physiologic issues with spermatogenesis in transwomen which has yet to be elucidated.…”

“…These have the potential to increase our understanding of the familial and environmental components associated with male factor infertility and expand the phenotypic definition to include multiple diseases. Within the last 10 years, the testicular dysgenesis syndrome (TDS) hypothesis, which proposes that disturbed testicular development in utero may result in male reproductive disorders, has been suggested as an explanation for a constellation of symptoms and diseases, which includes poor semen quality (Swan et al, 2000;Jouannet et al, 2001;Skakkebaek et al, 2001;McGlynn et al, 2003;Bray et al, 2006a, b;Centola et al, 2016).…”
