Warning Symptoms Are Associated With Survival From Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Abstract: Background Survival after sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) remains low and tools for improved prediction of individuals at long-term risk for SCA are still awaited. Alternative short-term approaches aimed at pre-emptive risk stratification and prevention are needed. Objective To assess characteristics of symptoms in the four weeks prior to SCA, and whether the response to these symptoms may be associated with a better outcome. Design Ongoing prospective population-based study. Setting Population of approximat… Show more

“…In this pathway, distress does not increase the risk of IHD, but is a consequence of symptoms of undiagnosed disease—that is, people with undiagnosed disease can ‘feel lousy’ physically, which affects mental health. Approximately half of patients report symptoms of undiagnosed disease in the months prior to a cardiac event 15. Sleep disturbances, fatigue, and chest and body pain/discomfort are commonly reported symptoms,16 17 and are known to lead to distress 18 19…”

“…It was previously shown that in more than half of sudden cardiac death (SCD) cases, SCA is the first manifestation of cardiovascular disease (CVD)[4]. However, recent findings of the OregonSUDS study[5] showed that about a half of SCA victims experienced non-specific symptoms within four weeks before SCA, which often recurred within 24 hours before SCA[5]. Importantly, patients’ awareness of CVD significantly improved survival of SCA[5].…”

“…Therefore, it is inferred, that Pre-Hospital Care (PHC) services are important health care devices because they provide specialized victim care and transportation even outside the hospital context. 4 SAMU has different levels of assistance, including Basic Support Units (BSUs) and Advanced Support Units (ASU). The professional team of BSUs is composed of at least one nursing tecnician, a nurse and a driver, while the teams in the ASU consists of a doctor, nurse and driver.…”
