Consumers and producers are becoming more open to the usage of natural cosmetics. This can be seen in them using a variety of natural cosmetic resources and materials. This fact is further supported by the trend of environmental and health awareness. These phenomena can be found within both the producers’ and the consumers’ behavior. Our research supports that green or natural products’ role in the cosmetics industry is getting more and more pronounced. The role of science is to determine the variables suggesting the consumer to change to natural cosmetics. The primary aim of our research is to find out to what extent the characteristics of the consumption of organic foods and natural cosmetics differ. We would like to know what factors influence consumer groups when buying green products. The novelty of the analyses is mainly that consumers were ordered into clusters, based on consuming bio-foodstuffs and preferring natural cosmetics. The cluster analysis has multiple variables, namely: Consumer behavior in light of bio-product, new natural cosmetics brand, or health- and environmental awareness preferences. The data was collected using online questionnaire, exclusively in Hungary during April–May of 2018. 197 participants answered our questions. The results of descriptive statistics and the cluster analysis show that there are consumers who prefer natural cosmetics, whereas some of them buy traditional ones. A third group use both natural and ordinary cosmetics. The results suggest that on the market of cosmetic products, health and environmental awareness will be a significant trend for both producer and consumer behavior, even in the future. However, it will not necessarily follow the trends of the foodstuffs industry, as the health effect spectrum of cosmetics is far shorter. In the future, the palette of natural cosmetics will become much wider. The main reason for this will be the appearance of green cosmetics materials and environmentally friendly production methods (mostly for packaging). The consumers will also have the possibility to choose the ones that suit them the most.

Pyracantha angustifolia has been used in traditional medicine to treat a range of diseases of the stomach and improve digestion, blood circulation, diarrhea, dysentery, and hemostasis. This study evaluated bioactivity-guided fractionation as a means to identify therapeutic phytochemicals from P. angustifolia that can attenuate melanogenesis and oxidation. Seven compounds with inhibitory effects on melanin production and tyrosinase (TYR) activity, as well as ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities, and have not been reported as whitening materials, were isolated from the n-butanol fraction from P. angustifolia leaves (PAL). Among the seven compounds, p-hydroxybenzoic acid beta-d-glucosylester (HG), and cimidahurinine (CD) had strong inhibitory effects of melanin production, TYR activity, and ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities. Western blot analysis showed that HG and CD suppressed tyrosinase-related protein (TYRP)-1 and TYRP-2 expression. These results suggest that P. angustifolia containing active compounds, such as HG and CH, is a potent therapeutic candidate for the development of hypopigmenting agents.

Biphenyls and dibenzofurans of the rosaceous subtribe Malinae and their role as phytoalexins

Main conclusion Biphenyl and dibenzofuran phytoalexins are differentially distributed among species of the rosaceous subtribe Malinae, which includes apple and pear, and exhibit varying inhibitory activity against phytopathogenic microorganisms. Abstract Biphenyls and dibenzofurans are specialized metabolites, which are formed in species of the rosaceous subtribe Malinae upon elicitation by biotic and abiotic inducers. The subtribe Malinae (previously Pyrinae) comprises approximately 1000 species, which include economically important fruit trees such as apple and pear. The present review summarizes the current status of knowledge of biphenyls and dibenzofurans in the Malinae, mainly focusing on their role as phytoalexins. To date, 46 biphenyls and 41 dibenzofurans have been detected in 44 Malinae species. Structurally, 54 simple molecules, 23 glycosidic compounds and 10 miscellaneous structures were identified. Functionally, 21 biphenyls and 21 dibenzofurans were demonstrated to be phytoalexins. Furthermore, their distribution in species of the Malinae, inhibitory activities against phytopathogens, and structure–activity relationships were studied. The most widely distributed phytoalexins of the Malinae are the three biphenyls aucuparin (3), 2ʹ-methoxyaucuparin (7), and 4ʹ-methoxyaucuparin (9) and the three dibenzofurans α-cotonefuran (47), γ-cotonefuran (49), and eriobofuran (53). The formation of biphenyl and dibenzofuran phytoalexins appears to be an essential defense weapon of the Malinae against various stresses. Manipulating phytoalexin formation may enhance the disease resistance in economically important fruit trees. However, this approach requires an extensive understanding of how the compounds are formed. Although the biosynthesis of biphenyls was partially elucidated, formation of dibenzofurans remains largely unclear. Thus, further efforts have to be made to gain deeper insight into the distribution, function, and metabolism of biphenyls and dibenzofurans in the Malinae.
