Aims of the study were to evaluate Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and type-specific prevalence in four anatomical sites in HIV infected men who have sex with men (MSM) compared with HIV uninfected MSM. Participants were recruited among the attendees of Infectious Diseases Clinics in Central Italy. A trained medical practitioner collected by interview sociodemographic data and information on medical history, sexual behavior, and drug use. Swabs from anal canal, oral cavity, urethral mucosa, and coronal sulcus were tested for HPV DNA and genotyping. Ninety MSM were enrolled, 45 subjects within each group. Overall, 48.9% MSM were HPV positive and prevalence was higher in HIV infected men (60.0% vs 37.8%, P = 0.035). HPV at multiple anatomic sites occurred in 59.1% MSM, with 34.1% and 22.7% at two and three sites, respectively. Prevalence of anal, coronal sulcus, oral, and urethral HPV was 96.3%, 37%, 21.6%, and 18.5% in HIV infected MSM, and 70.6%, 70.6%, 29.4%, and 23.5% among HIV uninfected. A similar proportion of HIV infected and uninfected MSM (59.2% and 58.8%) carried at least one high-risk genotype. Prevalence of types covered by nonavalent vaccine was 77.8% in HIV infected compared with 82.3% in HIV uninfected MSM. HPV 58 and 16 were mostly detected in HIV positive (43.7% and 31.2%) and negative MSM (50.0% and 40.0%). HPV detection rate underlined the high vulnerability of MSM to acquire multisite infections, characterized by various genotype combinations. Since nonavalent vaccine could have prevented 80% of HPV infections, study findings support the implementation of vaccination programs among MSM.

ObjectivesThe relationship between sexual practices, identity and role among Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) and HIV risk is the subject of ongoing investigation but less is known about how these aspects of sexuality relate to human papilloma-virus (HPV), an independent risk factor for HIV. This observational study investigated the relationship between HPV and sexual practices, identity and role as well as other sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV risk factors among HIV-negative heterosexually and homosexually identified Peruvian MSM.SettingCommunity-based clinic for MSM in Lima, Peru.Participants756 subjects were screened based on inclusion criteria of: born anatomically male; age ≥18 years; had any anal intercourse with a man during the previous 12 months; residing in metropolitan Lima; HIV negative; willing to commit to twice-yearly clinic visits for 24 months; had not participated in an HIV or HPV vaccine study. 600/756 participants met the inclusion criteria and were enrolled, of whom 48% (284) identified as homosexual and 10% (57) as heterosexual, the basis of the analyses performed.ResultsCompared with homosexually identified MSM, heterosexually identified MSM had completed fewer years of formal education and were less likely to have: anogenital HPV or visible anal warts; given oral sex to a man; or used a condom with their most recent female sexual partner (all p<0.05). Conversely, heterosexually identified MSM were more likely to have: visible penile warts; used a condom during last anal intercourse; smoked cigarettes; had transactional sex; and used drugs during sex in the previous month (all p<0.01). There was no difference found between heterosexually and homosexually identified MSM by syphilis or high-risk HPV prevalence.ConclusionsHPV burden, wart type (penile vs anal) and select HIV/STI risk behaviours differed between heterosexually and homosexually identified Peruvian MSM. Understanding the implications of these differences can lead to tailored HIV/STI prevention interventions for heterosexually identified MSM.Trial registration number NCT01387412.

Desenvolveu-se um estudo de revisão correlacionando a incidência do HPV em homens e a eficácia da vacina para esse gênero na América do Sul. A hipótese, embasada em artigos científicos relata que o vírus é o desencadeador de doenças como verrugas genitais, carcinoma de pênis, neoplasias de pênis e câncer anal e de orofaringe. Esse estudo foi embasado nas bases de dados Pubmed e Scielo, no qual foi levantado as idades, ocorrências de infecção e a aplicação da vacina como forma de prevenção. ABSTRACTThe evaluation of HPV in men in relation to the incidence and the application of vaccines are recurrent subjects, since the last administration in young people, significantly avoids the clinical manifestation of the most frequent viral strains, being HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18 and thus reduces the consequences of this STI, that can often be asymptomatic and allow transmission to men and women. A review study has been developed correlating the incidence of HPV in men and the efficacy of the vaccine to this gender in South America. The hypothesis, based on scientific articles reports that the virus is the trigger of diseases like genital warts, penile carcinoma, neoplasm of Penis and anal and oropharyngeal cancer. This study was based on the Pubmed and Scielo site databases, in which the ages, occurrences of infection and the application of the vaccine as a form of prevention were raised.
