Laboratory Diagnostics Market in East Africa: A Survey of Test Types, Test Availability, and Test Prices in Kampala, Uganda

Abstract: BackgroundDiagnostic laboratory tests are routinely defined in terms of their sensitivity, specificity, and ease of use. But the actual clinical impact of a diagnostic test also depends on its availability and price. This is especially true in resource-limited settings such as sub-Saharan Africa. We present a first-of-its-kind report of diagnostic test types, availability, and prices in Kampala, Uganda.MethodsTest types (identity) and availability were based on menus and volumes obtained from clinical laborato… Show more

“…For example, the use of the Widal test during an outbreak of acute febrile illness in Nepal led to misdiagnosis of typhoid which delayed the appropriate treatment of the causative agent (scrub typhus), resulting in dozens of deaths 9. The potential harms of current typhoid RDTs are compounded by the fact they are widely available, cheap and easy to use 10…”

“…In some cases, countries have an existing test menu or product guide that specifies the types of testing methods and corresponding technologies that should be conducted at each facility level. In other cases, countries do not explicitly define essential medical diagnostics, leaving gaps in quality and accessibility of critical diagnostic tests [20]. Therefore, a globally coordinated effort to identify essential medical diagnostics will not only be useful in determining what existing diagnostic products are presently underused, but also which products innovators might choose to develop because they either do not exist or have not been designed for use in LMICs.…”
