“…[71][72][73] These difficulties could underlie the phenomenon of self-medication with alcohol in SAUD individuals when confronted with negative affect and sensitive interpersonal situations. 74 In conclusion, our study shows that at the end of the detoxification stage, the intensity of depressive and anxiety symptoms is associated with reduced cortical thickness of regions involved in emotions-related processes. It suggests that in the minority of patients in whom depressive and anxious symptoms persist, alterations in cortical thickness are observed and these alterations are located in exactly the same regions as those found in patients suffering from severe depression or anxiety alone.…”

“…It has also been proposed that mentalizing deficits in SUD share similarities with such impairments in developmental disorders, such as autism and borderline personality disorder, which argues that such deficits may be rather predisposed (151). The notion that drugs might be instrumentalized by some users to self-medicate social-cognitive deficits has also been suggested (152). However, predispositions to, as well as chronic drug-effects on, social cognition deficits might be substance-as well as function-specific and future longitudinal studies are needed to delineate and characterize these different factors for each substance-using population.…”

“…I N HIS COMMENTARY (Fein, 2015) on Maurage and colleagues' paper (2015), Prof. Fein discussed the place that theory of mind (ToM) deficits play in our understanding of alcohol dependence's etiology and treatment. Prof. Fein acknowledged the important role played by impaired mentalizing abilities in alcohol dependence, as this deficit could hamper the ability to cope with social pressure (which constitutes an important relapse factor; Zywiak et al, 2003), and could partly explain the anxiety and depression symptoms frequently observed in this population (Schuckit, 2006).…”
