25th Anniversary Article: Recent Advances in n‐Type and Ambipolar Organic Field‐Effect Transistors

Abstract: The advantages of organic field-effect transistors, such as low cost, mechanical flexibility and large-area fabrication, make them potentially useful for electronic applications such as flexible switching backplanes for video displays, radio frequency identifications and so on. A large amount of molecules were designed and synthesized for electron transporting (n-type) and ambipolar organic semiconductors with improved performance and stability. In this review, we focus on the advances in performance and molec… Show more

“…However, through appropriate synthetic routes and rational molecular design, several n-type molecular and polymeric semiconductors have been synthesized exhibiting OTFT electron mobilities of 0.1-2.0 cm 2 V À1 s À1 under inert/nitrogen atmosphere as well as under ambient atmosphere. [16][17][18][19][20] By satisfying de Leeuw's hypothesis, our group has reported a high electron mobility of 3 cm 2 V À1 s À1 for a diketopyrrolopyrrolediketopyrrolopyrrole based conjugated polymer. 21 The polymer was substituted with hydrophobic and hydrophilic side-chains on alternate units of DPP.…”

“…Various conjugated molecules and polymers have been investigated intensively 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. These studies reveal that intermolecular/interchain packing and thin film crystallinity play a vital role in determining the charge transporting properties 12, 13.…”

“…Especially n-type and ambipolar polymers recently made strong progression [3][4][5][6][7][8]. However, as the channel resistance decreases due to the increase of organic semiconductor mobilities, contact resistances often become the bottleneck for the total device performance [1,9,10].…”
