Sensor4PRI: A Sensor Platform for the Protection of Railway Infrastructures

Abstract: Wireless Sensor Networks constitute pervasive and distributed computing systems and are potentially one of the most important technologies of this century. They have been specifically identified as a good candidate to become an integral part of the protection of critical infrastructures. In this paper we focus on railway infrastructure protection and we present the details of a sensor platform designed to be integrated into a slab track system in order to carry out both installation and maintenance monitoring … Show more

“…In our approach, WSN is integrated in the slab tracks in order to reduce the cost of installation and maintenance since it can provide real-time data that can help predict and detect abnormal situations. The prototype and system architecture were described in two previous papers: the sensor platform was described in the study by Can˜ete et al 9 and the communication architecture was described in the study by Can˜ete et al 10 The previous publications studied the feasibility of this solution and came up with a system that meets the scenario requirements while at the same time meeting an important cost requirement; it cannot exceed 10% of the total cost of the infrastructure. In this sense, a real-scenario test of the prototype based on low-cost components needs to be carried out to validate and reproduce all the possible situations.…”

“…The track movements over time, particularly where nearby construction work or where the track passes through vulnerable areas such as regions prone to landslides may affect the track settlement [45]. Moreover, inclinometers have been used to measure the tilt of the slab phase to help operators install the slab track in the right position and to periodically monitor the slab behavior in the monitoring phase [86].…”
