Supplementation with Red Palm Oil Increasesβ-Carotene and Vitamin A Blood Levels in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis

Abstract: Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) show decreased plasma concentrations of antioxidants due to malabsorption of lipid soluble vitamins and consumption by chronic pulmonary inflammation. β-Carotene is a major source of retinol and therefore is of particular significance in CF. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of daily intake of red palm oil (RPO) containing high amounts of β-carotene on the antioxidant levels in CF patients. Sixteen subjects were recruited and instructed to enrich their food … Show more

“…A popular local rice stew of the Igbos, known as ofe akwu (palm fruit stew), is even palm fruit-based, as suggested by the name of this native delicacy. In nutrition terms, palm oil is known to have high contents of αand β-carotene and Vitamins A and E with numerous health benefits (Nagendran et al, 2000;Sommerburg et al, 2015). Palm kernel oil, which too contains Vitamin E and is known be rather free of cholesterol, also offers numerous health benefits.…”

“…Content of β-carotene. RPO is an alternative source rich in β-carotene, α-carotene and tocopherols in which are believed to have beneficial health effects, one of which acts as an antioxidant and is an important singlet-oxygen-scavenger in the human body (Sommerburg et al 2015). Making cake products using RPO is intended to meet the need of beta-carotene.…”

“…Because of its exceptionally high PVA carotenoid content, RPO has been proposed as a foodbased intervention to prevent VAD and tested for this purpose in various small-scale human feeding studies. [52][53][54] While palm oil may be at the center of the 3-MCPD controversy, care should be taken not to neglect the economical, sustainable source of healthful nutrients innate to palm oil. The best quality RPO is processed using molecular distillation processes, and the levels of 3-MCPD and glycidyl esters are almost nonexistent in such products.…”
