Elevated interleukin-10: A new cause of dyslipidemia leading to severe HDL deficiency

Abstract: BACKGROUND Low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) is a risk factor for coronary artery disease. Investigating mechanisms underlying acquired severe HDL deficiency in noncritically ill patients (“Disappearing HDL Syndrome”) could provide new insights into HDL metabolism. OBJECTIVE To determine the cause of low HDL-C in patients with severe acquired HDL deficiency. METHODS AND RESULTS Patients with intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL, n=2), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL, n=1), and au… Show more

“…This may feed in to immune aberrations given the important role of vitamin D in promoting the generation of regulatory T cells [39]. However, interleukin-10, usually seen as an anti-inflammatory cytokine produced by regulatory T cells, has been shown to induce a precipitous decline in HDLc when administered to patients [40], and so it seems likely that the inflammatory cytokine milieu of rheumatoid arthritis is complex but may be driving the lipid and metabolic changes.…”

“…Known acquired causes for low and possibly very low HDL-C include some malignancies, severe sepsis, and other systemic illnesses that cause increased interleukin (IL)-10, and certain drugs, including anabolic steroids, fibrates, and thiazolidinediones (2,4,5 ). None of these applied to the patient under discussion, except perhaps for the possibility of increased IL-10 production as discussed in the next paragraph.…”
