Predictive Value of Echocardiographic Parameters for Clinical Events in Patients Starting Hemodialysis

Abstract: Echocardiographic parameters can predict cardiovascular events in several clinical settings. However, which echocardiographic parameter is most predictive of each cardiovascular or non-cardiovascular event in patients starting hemodialysis remains unresolved. Echocardiography was used in 189 patients at the time of starting hemodialysis. We established primary outcomes as follows: cardiovascular events (ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral artery disease, and acute heart failure), fatal … Show more

“…The patients were examined by two cardiologists with the method of conventional M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography for LVH estimation, systolic and diastolic cardiac function assessment, and consideration of the ischemic findings according to the recommendations of the American Society of Echocardiography [17]. LVH was defined by a thickness of the interventricular septum >11.5 mm.…”

“…Cross-section surveys demonstrate that up to 80% of dialysis patients have left ventricular (LV) alterations, among which left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is the most frequent finding [3]. LVH is considered a key cardiovascular complication in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, with an estimated prevalence ranging from 44 to >90% [4].…”
