The effect of body position on postprandial perceptions, gastric emptying, and intragastric meal distribution: An ultrasonographic study in reclining healthy subjects

Abstract: Postprandial perceptions are more pronounced, gastric emptying is faster, and antral area is wider in the RLR position compared to the LLR position. The results suggest that lying on the left side after a meal may be a measure to reduce postprandial dyspeptic sensations.

“…A minimal amount of force was applied during each reading to prevent compression of the antrum. In addition, it was ensured that all participants were kept in the same-seated position throughout the experiment, as it has been shown that body position may influence postprandial perceptions, gastric emptying, and intragastric meal distribution 21 . To ensure the accuracy of the results, the measurements were taken twice and then averaged.…”

“…The people tend to sleep for longer periods on their right side, apparently to avoid disturbance by the enlarged apical heartbeat or further hemodynamic or autonomic compromise on their left side. It has been also found that the gastric emptying is faster in the RLDP compared to LLDP, requires the stomach to pump its contents against gravity . Moreover, the LLDSP is associated with increased sympathetic nervous activity compared to RLDSP .…”

“…It has also been shown that cardiac vagal activity is greatest when the RLDP is adopted, and the sympathetic nervous system activity is lower in HF patients when they lie on their right sides mm Hg their left . Moreover, the RLDP may facilitate gastric emptying resulting in an increase in the vagal activity . Fujita et al reported that time in the RLDSP was twofold longer than that in the SSP and LLDSP in HF patients and showed the increased cardiac sympathetic activity and decreased vagal tone in LLDSP compared to RLDSP.…”
