Preparation and characterization of gatifloxacin-loaded alginate/poly (vinyl alcohol) electrospun nanofibers

Abstract: The aim of this study was to develop novel biomedicated electrospun nanofibers for controlled release. Pre-formulation studies were carried out for nanofibers of sodium alginate (SA) (2 wt %)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) (10 wt %) composites (2/8, 3/7 and 4/6), by an electrospinning technique. The morphology and average diameter of the nanofibers were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optimum ratio (3/7) was used to load gatifloxacin hydrochloride (GH) (1wt %), found to form smooth fibers with… Show more

“…7 showed diffusion based drug release occured for 30 min, then followed by a constant drug release till 8 h due to erosion of polymer matrix. Similar UV-Vis results were reported by Arthani et al [53]. However, the release rate in PVA-Gel/FA ber is partially slower than others for the rst 30 min.…”

“…The electrospun PVA-Alg and PVA bers were same absorption peaks approximately. However, the absorption peaks at 3284 cm -1 (-OH stretching) belongs to PVA that shifted to the 3297 cm -1 [53,54].…”

“…Also, alginates were extensively used for the tissue engineering scaffold fabrication [72][73][74]. For example, the alginate microspheres [75] or combination of the alginate, chitosan and chit oligosaccharides (alginate-chitosan-cos) and alginate chitosan, chit oligosaccharides with collagen (alginate-chitosan-cos-collagen) scaffold was used for the skin substitute and was illustrated that these scaffolds were improved the biocompatible nature that mimicked the functional environment of skin [76][77][78].…”

“…Electrospun nanofibers offer great flexibility in the selection of materials or drugs for drug delivery applications. Moreover, electrospun nanofibers exhibit marvelous characteristics such as high loading capacity, high encapsulation efficiency, they provide coincident delivery of various compounds, and are cost effective (Arthanari et al, 2014;Hu et al, 2014;Van Roey, Haxaire, Kamya, Lwanga, & Katabira, 2004). In our previous study, the fast dissolving CZ-loaded nanofiber mats were fabricated using PVP/HP␤CD as the fiber forming polymer.…”
