From rural to urban areas: differences in behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia in nursing home residents according to geographical location

Abstract: Rurality seems to play a positive role in the expression of BPSD. If this hypothesis were confirmed, it would encourage NH staff to develop activities that explore rural potentials for the management of BPSD.

“…Research in various European countries has shown differences in the health services provided to residents of rural and urban areas. In France, several studies identify differences between urban and rural health services as well as differences in the incidence of specific diseases (Bertin et al , 2015; Kihal-Talantikite et al , 2015; De Souto Barreto et al , 2014; Lemesle et al , 1996; Dufouil et al , 1995). The findings of Kovess-Masfety et al ’s (2005) research show that it is more prudent to rely on social indicators rather than seeking differences between urban and rural mental health issues.…”

“…The elderly in rural old-age care institutions have a higher suicide tendency, more cognitive barriers and problematic behaviors than those in urban old-age care institutions [ 48 , 49 ]. However, some studies comparing urban and rural residents show that rural residents are in a better state concerning dementia behavior and psychological symptoms [ 50 ]. The prominent medical gap between urban and rural areas in the field of cognition and psychotherapy makes the probability of correct diagnosis and related treatment of mental illnesses such as depression among the elderly in rural old-age care institutions lower than that in urban old-age care institutions [ 51 , 52 ].…”

“…Regarding medication composition, we investigated the prevalence of dementia medications and medications associated with BPSD. Medications were identified based on the ATC code; the ATC codes of medications related to BPSD were based on previous studies [ 46 , 47 ]. The medications investigated were as follows: N06D (anti-dementia drugs), N05A (antipsychotics), N05B (anxiolytics), N05C (hypnotics and sedatives), N03A (antiepileptics), N06A (antidepressants), N02 (analgesics).…”
