Virtualization of Event Sources in Wireless Sensor Networks for the Internet of Things

Abstract: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are generally used to collect information from the environment. The gathered data are delivered mainly to sinks or gateways that become the endpoints where applications can retrieve and process such data. However, applications would also expect from a WSN an event-driven operational model, so that they can be notified whenever occur some specific environmental changes instead of continuously analyzing the data provided periodically. In either operational model, WSNs represent a … Show more

“…The use of virtualization for abstracting the capabilities of heterogeneous devices has already been used in other domains. For instance, in [43], Lucas Martínez et al described a model for the virtualization of event sources inspired by the IoT-A domain model [44]. This model, as partially illustrated in Figure 6, provides the access to the capabilities of a physical entity by the use of the services and resources exposed through its virtual representation as a virtual entity.…”

“…Specifically, sensor nodes are one-coverage when deployed and are k -coverage for improving the accuracy of event detection. A virtualization for representing event sources is presented in [ 44 ], which serve as Internet sources and can be accessed by Internet applications. A survey about the anomaly detection in WSNs is presented in [ 19 ].…”

“…It shows some smart services with a real infrastructure (sensor nodes, communication paths, base station, etc. ) defined as a Real Smart Service ( RSS ), coexisting with other services comprised of combining and processing the information available, defined as Virtual Smart Services ( VSS ) [ 31 , 32 , 33 ]. In this environment the components to protect are sensor nodes, communication paths, base station, and sensible data that flow through them in the RSS .…”
