In dieser Arbeit wird die Auffassung vertreten, dass die Unterscheidung zwischen dem dynamischen und dem deskriptiven Unbewussten verloren zu gehen droht, und es wird auf die Konsequenzen hingewiesen, die dieser Verlust für unsere praktische klinische Arbeit hat. Den Hintergrund der Überlegungen des Autors bilden die in den Revisionen der Traumdeutung deutlich werdenden inneren Kämpfe Freuds mit seiner radikalen Sicht des dynamischen Unbewussten als dem letztlich Unbekannten. Dabei bezieht sich der Autor auf Laplanche, der meinte, Freud habe die von ihm ausgelöste kopernikanische Revolution erkannt und sei versucht gewesen, eine ptolemäische Umkehr zu vollziehen. Darüber hinaus geht es um die verwirrende Frage, ob Gefühle als unbewusst bezeichnet werden können und darum, welche Folgen diese Verwirrung für unsere klinische Arbeit hat, insbesondere für die Konzepte von Übertragung und Gegenübertragung. Anhand der ausführlichen Analyse eines Traums wird gezeigt, wie sich das dynamische Unbewusste auswirkt.
