Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of selenium in oral buccal mucosa and small intestinal mucosa during intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury

Abstract: BackgroundThe aim of this study were to investigate whether selenium treatment attenuates lipid peroxidation and downregulates the NF-κB pathway in small intestinal mucosa and to examine whether the effect of selenium is also observed in oral buccal mucosa, during small intestinal IR injury.Materials and methodsEighteen rats were assigned into three groups: sham, IR, and IR + selenium. Saline or selenium was administered through a tail vein. 24 hours later, the superior mesenteric artery was exposed and clampe… Show more

“…İnsan vücudunda en azından 25 selenoprotein bulunur ve bunlar antioksidan enzimler (glutatyon peroksidaz), antioksidan proteinler (selenoprotein P ve W) ve diğer metabolik enzimlerin fonksiyonuna göre sınıflan-dırılır. Selenyum, GPx aktivitesini artırarak ROS oluşumunu baskılar (44).…”

“…All at once, the two genes utilize a powerful anti-inflammatory action preventing the NF-κB pathway. 41 On the other hand, previous studies revealed that sele nium plays important roles in the enhancement of the antioxidant defense system, 42 increased GPx activity, 43 scavenge the free radicals and ROS 44 and down regulate the NF-κB pathway, 45 Consistent with previous study, SeNPs plays important roles in the enhancement of the antioxidant defense system whereas, the administration of SeNPs caused a marked improvement in hepatic antioxidant activities, which is due to its function in the active site of many antioxidant enzymes; like GPx. 46 selenium compounds or its metabolites may directly activate the Nrf2 pathway by modifying critical thiols in Keap1.…”

“…As a control, chickens were fed a Seadequate (0.4 mg/kg Se) diet. Chickens were maintained and housed in a specific pathogen-free room at constant temperature (20-22°C) with free access to food and water [10]. All chickens were anesthetized with 80 mg/kg ketamine hydrochloride, and the duodenal mucosa was scraped in nine chickens at 7, 21, and 35 days old.…”

“…Se has antioxidative properties and protects the organism against actions of free radicals and carcinogenic factors [9]. The influence of Se on the activity of antioxidant enzymes as well as oxidative stresses could be determined in oral buccal mucosa during small intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury [10]. Se deficiency has been strongly linked with a number reproductive complications, and oxidative stress was widely implicated in failed reproductive performance, including infertility, miscarriage, diabetesrelated congenital malformations, and preeclampsia [20].…”
