Objective: To explore the mediation and moderation effects of personality traits on the relationship between self-perceived malocclusion and the psychosocial impact of dental esthetics. Materials and Methods: The sample included 252 subjects (62% female) aged 12-39 years. Selfperceived malocclusion was estimated using the 10-point scale Aesthetic Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need. The Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire was used to assess the psychological impact and the Big Five Inventory for personality traits. Moderation and mediation effects were evaluated with Pearson correlations and stepwise regression analysis, respectively. Results: Self-perceived malocclusion ranged from 1 to 8 and was the most significant predictor of psychosocial impact of dental esthetics, whose unique contribution accounted for 11%-36.4% of variability, while age and sex accounted for 1.2%-2.5%. Personality traits had no mediating effect on this relationship. The moderating effect of agreeableness was present in the relationship between self-perceived degree of malocclusion and Social Impact (SI), Psychological Impact (PI), and Aesthetic Concern (AC) (DR2 5 0.035, 0.020, and 0.013, respectively; P , .001), while conscientiousness affected the relationship between perception of malocclusion and SI and PI (DR2 5 0.018 and 0.016, respectively; P , .05). In people with lower agreeableness and conscientiousness, increasing the severity of self-perceived malocclusion leads to less increase in SI and PI. In people with lower agreeableness, the increase influences AC in a similar manner. Extraversion, neuroticism, and openness do not have a moderating effect. Conclusions:The relationship between self-perceived malocclusion and the psychosocial impact of dental esthetics appears to be moderated and not mediated by personality traits. Adolescents and young adults with lower agreeableness and conscientiousness seem to be less affected by the increased severity of self-perceived malocclusion, as demonstrated in reporting some psychosocial impacts. Aim: This study was designed to evaluate knowledge and awareness toward orthodontic treatment among treated subjects as compared with untreated subjects and to correlate the communications between treated subjects and their practicing orthodontists. Materials and methods:Self-reported questionnaires were distributed to be completed by the consent subjects. They were 340 untreated subjects (220 males and 120 females) and 102 subjects (57 males and 45 females) who recently received orthodontic treatment in the age range 19 to 28 years. Subjects that received orthodontic treatment were selected among the attendees of clinics of College of Dentistry, Jazan University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version 21, Institute Inc., USA).Results: Subjects who received orthodontic treatment scored higher mean of total scores of awareness 14.74 and knowledge 11.18. The difference of awareness and knowledge between treated and untreated subjects was highly significant (p = 0.000). The female treated subjects scored higher than male treated subjects in attitude toward thumb sucking as a cause of malocclusion (91.3 and 70.2% respectively). Early primary teeth extraction as a cause of malocclusion was scored by 76.1% females and 42.1% males. The male treated subjects show significant (p > 0.05) correlation between the total items of knowledge of orthodontic treatment and total items of orthodontist-patient communications. Conclusion:Orthodontic treated subjects have more knowledge and awareness about orthodontic treatment than untreated subjects. A significant association was found between communications and knowledge of orthodontic treatment in male as compared with female patients.Clinical significance: Knowledge and awareness toward orthodontic treatment and the communications of orthodontic patients with treating orthodontist can significantly increase the orthodontic treatment outcome.

IntroductionHuman face is a universal and key feature that affects physical appearance and attractiveness (1, 2), and marketing experts use attractive faces and smiles in product advertising. There are two reasons for using a human face: firstly, it serves as an access point to different abstract systems of numerous companies that are being advertised (3); secondly, it contains a great amount of information, the most important ones in advertising are emotions (4).The role of emotions in marketing is based on increasing the emotional link between consumers and a brand. A commercial which can surprise, amuse or even make people cry enables the advertisers achieve their goals -inculcating the products in audience`s minds, making positive associations with the brand and driving sales up (5). There are several different marketing instruments which can trigger certain emotions of the targeted audience such as sex appeal, humor appeal, fear appeal and joy appeal with the latter presenting people laughing and having a good time (5). Although smile is not the only way to trigger happiness, it is still a universal expression which plays an important role in social interaction (3, 6, 7). UvodLice je univerzalna i ključna značajka koja utječe na fizič-ki izgled i privlačnost neke osobe (1, 2), a marketinški struč-njaci koriste se privlačnim licima i osmijesima u reklamiranju proizvoda. Dva su razloga za korištenje ljudskoga lica: prvi je da ono služi kao pristupna točka različitim apstraktnim sustavima mnogobrojnih kompanija koje se reklamiraju (3), a drugi je da sadržava veliku količinu informacija od kojih su za reklamiranje najvažnije emocije (4).Uloga osjećaja u marketingu temelji se na jačanju emocionalne povezanosti između potrošača i proizvoda. Reklama koja može iznenaditi, zabaviti ili čak rasplakati ljude omogućuje oglašivačima da postignu svoje ciljeve -proizvod će biti zapamćen i ostvarit će pozitivne asocijacije te će se tako povećati prodaja (5). Nekoliko je marketinških instrumenata koji mogu potaknuti određene emocije kod ciljane publike, primjerice, seksualna privlačnost, humorističnost, zastrašivanje i uživanje; ovo posljednje često je predstavljeno ljudima koji se smiju i dobro zabavljaju (5). Iako osmijeh nije jedini način za poticanje sreće, ipak je univerzalan oblik izražavanja koji ima važnu ulogu u društvenim interakcijama (3, 6, 7). Sažetak Svrha: Slike nasmiješenih ljudi sveprisutne su u marketingu. Ovo istraživanje bavilo se učestalo-šću i karakteristikama osmijeha, kontekstom korištenoga osmijeha i ciljanom publikom novinskih reklama. Materijali i postupci: Četiri istraživača analizirala su 600 reklama iz 46 europskih časopisa i novina, a koristili su se analizom sadržaja i analizom uokvirivanja. Dvadeset stavki obrasca za analizu upotrijebljeno je za bilježenje prisutnosti ljudi, karakteristika osmijeha, konteksta u kojem je osmijeh korišten, dojma uspjeha i zdravlja i koja je ciljana publika.
