Assessment of inter-atrial, inter-ventricular, and atrio-ventricular interactions in tetralogy of Fallot patients after surgical correction. Insights from two-dimensional speckle tracking and three-dimensional echocardiography

Abstract: In asymptomatic tetralogy of Fallot patients, biatrial dysfunction exists and can be quantified via two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography as well as real-time three-dimensional echocardiography. Different forms of interactions on atrial and ventricular levels are evident among such cohorts.

“…The clinical relevance of impaired atrial function in heart failure development is increasingly recognized [6] . Right atrial (RA) function has been studied in some congenital heart disease (CHD) [7] , [8] using echocardiography and CMR [9] . Both echocardiography and CMR-FT are equally able to discriminate left and right atrial phasic performance based on strain (ε) and strain rate (SR) imaging [10] , [11] , [12] .…”

“…Three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography and 3D derived speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) are novel, reliable techniques for the evaluation of left ventricular (LV) left atrial (LA) performance [ 10 14 ]. These techniques are able to detect latent global and regional myocardial dysfunction, which cannot be detected by the conventional echocardiography methods.…”

“…Others have evaluated echocardiographic parameters of the right ventricle and their agreement with volumes and function estimated by MRI . There is an increasing interest in functional assessment including strain imaging that may add complimentary information and reveal subclinical disease.…”

“…Echocardiographic findings may help decide which patients would require MRI . Echocardiographic analysis of atrial and ventricular function may provide additive information . There are no specific pediatric guidelines for PR classification, and there is no consensus regarding management of children with PR .…”
