A Bright Side, Facet Analysis of Histrionic Personality Disorder: The Relationship Between the HDS Colourful Factor and the NEO-PI-R Facets in a Large Adult Sample

Abstract: This study looks at "bright-side," Big Five Personality trait correlates of a "dark-side" Personality Disorder, namely Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD). More than 5000 British adults completed the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Personality Inventory-Revised (Costa & McCrae, 1985), which measures the Big Five Personality factors at the Domain (Super Factor) and the Facet (Factor) level, as well as the Hogan Development Survey (HDS; Hogan & Hogan, 2009), which has a measure of HPD, exclusively called "Co… Show more

“…Narcissistic style was negatively predicted by agreeableness in patients, which was also in line with the finding that the agreeableness level was lower in the narcissistic individuals [53,54]. The histrionic personality disorder patients often display disagreeable behaviors [55,56], and agreeableness has a mild effect to protect their symptomatic remissions [57]. These notions are also supported by our finding that agreeableness was negatively associated with histrionic style in healthy volunteers.…”

“…This confirms many clinical observations of them being rather "uptight" and anxious (Oldham & Morris, 2000). There have been various other studies similar to this which have attempted to ascertain the amount of variance the Big Five can account for in the analysis of a PD (Furnham & Crump, 2014a;2014b;2014c;2015). Thus studies on Schizotypal and AntiSocial PD show that the Big Five at either domain or facet level account for as much as a third of the variance.…”

“…Based on the work of Moscoso and Salgado (2004) it was predicted that PAPD/Leisurely would be significantly positively correlated with Neuroticism and negatively correlated with Extraversion, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. It follows the same analytic strategy of Furnham and Crump (2013;2014a;2014b;2014c;2015).…”

“…Prior research suggests that genetic and environmental risk factors for social anxiety disorder and avoidant personality disorder are shared to a large degree (Isomura et al, 2015; Torvik et al, 2016). It is plausible that both disorders reflect temperamental traits such as behavioral inhibition and fear of social situations (Torvik et al, 2016), which are rarely observed in individuals with histrionic personality disorder who classically present high levels of extraversion (Furnham, 2014), and has been shown to predict worse MDE course (Kasch et al, 2002). …”
