“…A second treatment is rhubarb (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) and its Chinese herbal formula Chai-Qin-Cheng-Qi (CQCQD), which have been shown by recent systematic review [28] and meta-analyses [29, 30] to reduce incidence of organ failure, need for surgical intervention, and mortality in AP. Recent clinical trials have also shown that rhubarb [31] and CQCQD derivatives [3235] reduce intra-abdominal pressure, shorten the duration of ileus, and improve clinical outcomes. The mechanism by which this treatment effect occurs is unknown but could be through Ca 2+ -dependent intracellular signalling pathways in intestinal SMCs [21].…”

“…TNF-a and IL-6 are inflammatory cytokines, whereas IL-11 is an inhibitory factor. In th previous study on acute severe pancreatitis, the inhibitory role of IL-11 and promoting role of IL-6 in inflammation has also been reported [13], and found that the imbalanced levels of these two factors serves as a major source in leading irregular inflammatory response. Exogenous IL-11 supply retained a balanced IL-11/IL-6 ratio, thereby reducing the degree of inflammatory response indicated by an improved APACHE II score which is now recognized as an index to assess disease severity and is closely correlated with prognosis [14].…”

“…Therefore, catharsis alone may not be adequate therapy for IAH/ACS. Rhubarb is associated with multiple therapeutic effects and is often used to relieve constipation (12). A recent study also indicated that rhubarb also promotes intestinal epithelial proliferation and improves intestinal function in sepsis (13).…”
