Retrospective case–control study of viral pathogen screening in proliferative verrucous leukoplakia lesions

Abstract: No association between proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and target viruses was detected. A higher throughput viral metagenomic approach may prove valuable for future analyses, as it would not be restricted to a priori knowledge of potential targets.

“…In the study published in 2008, EBV was found to be more prevalent in 10 PVL patients than in either OSCC or normal mucosa, whereas in the study published in 2016, EBV was found to be most prevalent in OSCC, and more prevalent in nine PVL patients than in normal mucosa. Oncoviruses (herpesvirus, papillomavirus, and polyomavirus) were not found in 10 PVL patients in study by García‐López et al…”

“…Fourteen studies included controls and compared their results with either normal oral mucosa, conventional oral leukoplakia, reactive lesions, or malignant tumors . Ten studies only analyzed biomarker expression (whether the biomarkers were present or not/strength of staining) . Four studies analyzed how biomarker expression was association with clinical and/or histological data .…”
