Short communication: Antimicrobial susceptibility profiling and genotyping of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from bovine mastitis in Poland

Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus is the predominant causative agent of bovine mastitis, a disease that remains a major economic burden for the dairy industry worldwide. In this study, the antimicrobial resistance patterns and the genetic composition of 80 S. aureus mastitis isolates collected from 14 dairy farms in Eastern Poland were determined. Of the 10 antimicrobial agents evaluated, only testing for penicillin G produced drug resistance. As 41% of the S. aureus isolates were penicillin resistant, this drug along wit… Show more

“…S. aureus isolated from animals with clinical and subclinical mastitis exhibit high rates of resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics (Kalmus et al, 2011;El Behiry et al, 2012;Silva et al, 2012;Jagielski et al, 2014;Schmidt et al, 2015). A considerable rate of simultaneous resistance to beta-lactamases amoxicillin, ampicillin and penicillin was found in 69.03% (18/26) of S. aureus isolates in this study (Table 1).…”

“…To date, the issue of resistant or multiresistant MCP such as methicillin‐resistant S. aureus (MRSA) seems to play a subordinate role in dairy industry (Erskine et al., ; Kreausukon et al., ; Oliver, Murinda, & Jayarao, ; Pol & Ruegg, ; Schröder, Hoedemaker, & Klein, ; Tenhagen et al., ). However, the number of studies reporting of enhanced emergence of AMR increases (da Costa Krewer et al., ; Ding et al., ; Fairbrother et al., ; Jagielski et al., ; Petrovski et al., ; Ruegg, Oliveira, Jin, & Okwumabua, ; Saini, McClure, Scholl, DeVries, & Barkema, ; Spohr et al., ).…”

“…Resistance to β-lactam antibiotics has been also reported as one of the main problems related to the persistence of mastitis [6,7]. Multidrug resistance is also reported to be increasing.…”
