Scuba diving induces nitric oxide synthesis and the expression of inflammatory and regulatory genes of the immune response in neutrophils

Abstract: Scuba diving which combines hyperoxia, hyperbaria, and acute exercise induces nitrosative damage with increased nitrotyrosine levels and an inflammatory response in neutrophils.

“…This is the first report of MPs expressing nitrotyrosine, a manifestation of protein nitration likely resulting from production of peroxynitrite or some similarly reactive nitrogen species. Increased presence of nitrotyrosine on MPs is consistent with results in a mouse model and also a report of nitrotyrosine elevations in neutrophils obtained from SCUBA divers (21,24). Because dietary ascorbic acid supplementation abrogates elevations of nitrotyrosine-bearing MPs, the results suggest that ascorbic acid acts at sites proximal to pressurerelated production of the reactive species capable of nitration reactions.…”

“…There is substantial evidence that oxidative stress occurs with SCUBA diving (3,5,17,(21)(22)(23). We found that prophylactic ingestion of ascorbic acid was effective for inhibiting MP elevations and neutrophil activation due to diving.…”

“…Changes in antioxidant system were also obtained in previous studies after static and dynamic apneas [3,16,17,28]. In addition, scuba diving which is characterized by exercising in hyperoxia increases the mRNA levels of genes related with the inflammatory and immune response in neutrophils [31]. However, in the present study the stimulus is greater as the divers performed around 300 immersions during the 5 days monitored, resulting in a significant antioxidant response.…”
