25-GHz repetition-rate singly resonant optical parametric oscillator synchronously pumped by a mode-locked diode oscillator amplifier system

Abstract: We report on an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) that is synchronously pumped directly by a diode laser. This laser is an actively mode-locked master-oscillator power-amplifier system that produces 20-ps pulses at 927 nm with a repetition rate of 2.5 GHz and an average power of 0.9 W. The OPO, which is a singly resonant device based on periodically poled lithium niobate, generates 7.8-ps pulses. The OPO threshold is 300 mW of average pump power, and the maximum average idler output power is 78 mW at a wavel… Show more

“…This makes them interesting for telecom pulse sources. However, the repetition rate was limited until recently to values of a few GHz [25] because higher repetition rates make it difficult to exceed the threshold value of the pump peak power of the OPO. By pushing the performance of passively mode-Iocked lasers at 1 /-Lm in terms of power and repetition rate we could develop widely tunable OPOs with 10-GHz pulse repetition rate and high average output powers.…”

“…The major innovations in SPOPOs have been achieved by way of improved pump sources and through the use of quasi-phase-matched (QPM) nonlinear materials, such as periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). These developments have led to threshold powers as low as a few milliwatts of average pump power, 2 thus enabling, for example, direct diode-laser pumping 3 and pumping with a fiber laser. 4 In the latter study, a quasi-cw mode-locked fiber laser was used with pump pulses of 20-ps duration at a repetition rate of 85 MHz.…”

“…Also the first synchronously-pumped OPO driven directly with a diode laser has been realized, by replacing the CW master-oscillator in Sec. 6 with an actively mode-locked (picosecond emitting) oscillator diode [90].…”
