Plasma matrix metalloproteinase‐9 activity in cats with lymphoma

Abstract: In this study, plasma MMP-9 activity was evaluated in cats with lymphoma. Plasma samples were obtained from 26 cats with lymphoma before treatment. From 13 of the included 26 cats, plasma samples were obtained 4 weeks after the initiation of treatment. Plasma samples were also obtained from 10 healthy cats as a control. Plasma MMP-9 activity was examined by gelatin zymography and semi-quantitative value (arbitrary unit; a.u.) for each sample was calculated. Relatively high levels of MMP-9 were observed in cats… Show more

“…A recent review article describes that MMPs are present in a variety of animals, including cats [ 38 ]. For example, studies have shown that MMPs are expressed in feline tumors, including MMP9 and MMP2, in feline meningioma and mammary cancer [ 39 , 40 ], and MMP9 in feline lymphoma [ 41 ]. Therefore, it is not surprising that the CD147, as an inducer of MMP activity, would have a role in feline tumors as it does for human cancer.…”

“…To determine our enrolment target, exact, single-stage, phase II sample size tables were used ( 36 ). A target activity or a response rate of 35% was chosen as the low end of accepted response rates in treatment protocols used for refractory or resistant canine lymphoma ( 37 41 ). P 0 was chosen as 5% as a purposefully low threshold, given the preliminary nature of this investigation.…”

“…29 Altered expression of these enzymes is critical in different physiological and pathological processes and has been investigated in numerous feline conditions. 2,31,32,39,41 Sorensen et al 36 evaluated a group of MMPs on fresh FISS biopsies with reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), showing that MMP-2 and membrane type-MMP-16 were correlated with survival time.…”
