Projecting Cancer Incidence and Deaths to 2030: The Unexpected Burden of Thyroid, Liver, and Pancreas Cancers in the United States

Abstract: Cancer incidence and deaths in the United States were projected for the most common cancer types for the years 2020 and 2030 based on changing demographics and the average annual percentage changes in incidence and death rates. Breast, prostate, and lung cancers will remain the top cancer diagnoses throughout this time, but thyroid cancer will replace colorectal cancer as the fourth leading cancer diagnosis by 2030, and melanoma and uterine cancer will become the fifth and sixth most common cancers, respective… Show more

“…However, despite most advanced surgical techniques and antineoplastic combination treatments for advanced PDAC, the overall 5-year survival still remains low at 6% [2]. PDAC is expected to become the second-leading cause of cancer death by 2030, due to an increasing incidence and currently limited options to improve overall survival [3]. Less than 20% of PDAC patients are amenable to a curative surgical resection due to late clinical presentation, and early and aggressive local and metastatic progression [4].…”

“…It is currently the fourth leading cause of cancer death and projects to become the second leading cause by 2030. 1 The 5-year relative survival rate has remained in the single digits for decades. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is notoriously difficult to detect before an advanced, inoperable stage is reached due to nonspecific symptomatology and the retroperitoneal location of the pancreas, which makes palpation or routine biopsy of suspicious masses difficult.…”
