Expression of IFNγ, IL‐4, and IL‐17 in cutaneous schistosomal granuloma

Abstract: This study suggests that CSG is formed by the action of both Th1 (IFN-γ) and Th17 (IL-17) cytokines, which have been shown to be directed against the schistosomal egg to induce a cell-mediated immune response.

“…The intensity of the stain was subjectively evaluated (mild: light staining, moderate: moderate staining or strong: intense staining). With regarding the inflammatory cells in dermis, they were also assessed for positivity, percentage of positive cells and the staining intensity of both the primary studied antibodies (IL‐17A and FOXP3) 14 …”

“…While the urologic and gastrointestinal forms of infection receive adequate coverage in the infectious disease literature, the cutaneous forms of disease are much less emphasized, even within dermatology training programs. These entities present a diagnostic challenge when encountered in non‐tropical climates where schistosomiasis is rare 30–31 …”

“…Late cutaneous schistosomiasis is a result of a granulomatous reaction to deposition of eggs in the dermis that manifests several months after infection 33 . When an adult female worm travels an aberrant route to the skin and deposits an egg, an inflammatory cascade follows that results in the formation of distinctive granulomas months after exposure 31 . Eggs reach the skin because of portosystemic anastomoses via the inferior mesenteric vein and rectal venous plexus 36 .…”
