Malignant Rhabdoid Tumor of the Kidney and Spine in an Infant

Abstract: Rhabdoid tumor of the kidney (RTK) is a rare malignancy in infancy. Central nervous system involvement in RTK is already known. However, solitary spinal metastasis in RTK has been hardly reported. The authors report a case of metastatic RTK to spine causing paraplegia in an 8-month-old girl. Since the patient was young, the diagnosis of spine metastasis was delayed until paraplegia was seen after radical nephrectomy. Thorough neurological examination should be performed for early diagnosis of spinal metastasis… Show more

“…In this study, the sex ratio of new patients with cutaneous melanoma favored female patients (1:1.8 male-to-female ratio), unlike what has been observed in Korean reports that were similarly designed or that deliberately included more men [ 11 12 13 ].…”

“…Moreover, foot melanoma had the highest incidence rate among both males and females. However, in a study analyzing Korean subjects, Park et al [ 13 ] found that the most common site for melanoma in men was the lower extremity, whereas it was the upper extremity in women, which was not the case for the subjects included in our study.…”

“…Typically, rhabdoid tumors are found in the central nervous system or in the kidneys [11]. There have been reported cases of local invasion of rhabdoid tumors from the spinal cord to bone [17], as well as metastases from kidney to bone [18]. However, these are examples of local and distant metastatic invasion, not primary tumor of bone.…”
