Gastric adenocarcinoma incidence in the province of Messina (Insular Italy): A cancer registry study

Abstract: The incidence of cancer by age, gender and tumor type at a population-based level is infrequently investigated. The aim of the present study was to describe the burden and outcome of gastric carcinomas (excluding cancers of the esophagogastric junction) experienced by the elderly, particularly for patients aged ≥81 years. A population-based series of 322 patients exhibiting gastric cancer, diagnosed between 2003 and 2005 and from the province of Messina (insular Italy; population, 662,450) was used. The median… Show more

“…For some variables, such as the crude sex ratio, the proportion of cardiac cancers and the five-year survival rates, results seem to peak at the age groups of 50-70 years (Table 1). Patients below the age of 50 in some respects proved more similar to the patients above 80 [6,22]. A crude male to female ratio of 1.3 among older patients, as compared to 2.4-2.3 for the age categories of 50-70 years, is readily explained by the fact that females were more prevalent among the octogenarians.…”

“…They are inherently highly selected, and reported outcomes are influenced accordingly. Population-based studies that include all patients, irrespective of age, disease stage or treatment are few, to some extent incomplete, and seldom report on individual patient data [3][4][5][6][7].…”

“…Although the incidence and mortality from gastric carcinoma (GC) significantly decreased over the last fifty years, this tumor still represents the third most common malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide [ 1 ]. The high mortality rate from GC is mainly related to late diagnosis and to the lack of programs for early detection of this tumor [ 2 4 ]. The EUROCARE-5 results show that the 5-year survival rate to GC is 25.1%, with a significant difference recorded between men and women [ 1 ].…”

“…Of note, survival with GC varies depending upon the geographic area, with the highest survival rate observed in southern and central Europe and the lowest in Eastern Europe, United Kingdom, and Ireland [ 1 ]. Among the European countries, a high incidence of mortality from GC is encountered in Italy [ 2 , 5 , 6 ]; interestingly, a remarkable peculiar geographic variation was reported in this country [ 2 , 5 , 6 ] with the highest death rate in central and northern regions and the lowest in southern Italy [ 2 , 6 , 7 ].…”
