A Unique Case of Late Complication of Rectum Mesh Erosion after Laparoscopic Sacrocolpopexy

Abstract: Sacrocolpopexy, a surgical technique with a low morbidity rate, is a valid procedure for repairing vaginal vault prolapse. To our knowledge, only 1 case of rectum erosion after open sacrocolpopexy has been reported in the literature, and there is no record of any such incident after laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy. We report the first case of mesh erosion involving the rectum instead of the vagina assessed 8 years after laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy.

“…The remaining presenting symptoms were varied with no clear pattern emerging. Faecal incontinence, painful defaecation, rectal discharge and one unusual presentation of a lumbosacral spondylodiscitis were reported [13]. This serves to highlight the importance of having a high index of suspicion when assessing a symptomatic patient in a colorectal clinic when there has been a history of previous urogynaecological surgery involving mesh.…”

“…Five of the studies included were case reports whose purpose was to report an unusual or unexpected surgical complication. The initial prosthesis/graft insertion procedures were laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy in two reports [9,12], transvaginal POP in two reports [10,11], and UI in one report [13]. Length of follow-up ranged widely from 11 days to 10 years.…”
