Effects of Cadmium on Bone Mineral Density in the Distal and Proximal Forearm: Two Female Population Studies in China

Abstract: Long-term cadmium exposure may cause bone loss in distal or proximal sites in the forearm. In this study, we observed the effects of cadmium on bone mineral density in both distal and proximal sites in the forearm in two female populations. A total of 456 women living in two different areas participated. All of the participants completed a questionnaire, and the bone mineral density was measured in both the distal and proximal forearm by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Urine samples were collected for the de… Show more

“…Previous studies on Cd have focused on chronic low Cd exposure, mainly from dietary sources, which damages organ function and human health, rather than acute, lethal exposure 35 . Among these reports, studies have emerged that demonstrate the toxic influence of chronic low Cd exposure on bone mineral density 36 37 38 39 . One potential molecular mechanism of Cd-induced bone toxicity is osteoblast apoptosis, which is responsible for bone remodeling 40 .…”

“…70 Bone mineral density was also shown to be affected in Chinese women following Cd exposure which also correlated with renal symptoms. 71 However, low-level Cd exposure may affect kidney tubules without the involvement of glomeruli and impairment of the bones. 72 It is now apparent from the data accumulated from many studies that early monitoring of at-risk populations would be very beneficial.…”

“…Additional data inspection and conversion were performed to unify the database. Due to data overlap in serial articles by Chen et al [36][37][38][39][40], only the one most relevant to this study was included [39]. The authors of three original studies [18,23,39] kindly provided additional unpublished data.…”
