Prognostic Significance of Metastasis-Related MicroRNAs in Early Breast Cancer Patients with a Long Follow-up

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Stability of microRNAs (miRNAs) in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues enables their reliable analysis in archived FFPE tissue samples, which are an invaluable source for the evaluation of novel biomarkers. Especially in breast cancer, for which late relapses occur in many cases, analysis of miRNAs in FFPE tissues holds great potential, because it can lead to the discovery of novel biomarkers suitable for future routine clinical diagnostics for breast cancer. We investigated the prognos… Show more

“…76 It has been reported that in a cohort of early breast cancer patients, decreased miR-205 is associated with worse disease-free interval and overall survival. 77 Similarly, in our cohort of advanced breast cancer patients, lower miR-205 expression is also associated with worse survival.…”

“…miRNAs are key regulators of gene expression because each miRNA targets, on average, 200 mRNA transcripts (18 ). The expression of specific miRNAs in primary breast tumors has been associated with the clinical outcome in several studies (19,20 ). Because of their small size and remarkable stability (21 ), miRNAs can also be detected in serum and plasma as cell-free circulating miRNAs (21)(22)(23).…”

“…Using the search criteria (Figure 1), a total of 7 publications met the criteria for this analysis (Gee et al, 2008;Radojicic et al, 2011;Liang et al, 2011;Song et al, 2012;Chang et al, 2014;Markou et al, 2014;Parrella et al, 2014). The total number of patients included was 770 ranging from 60 to 219 patients per study.…”
