Metabolic markers and microecological characteristics of tongue coating in patients with chronic gastritis

Abstract: BackgroundIn Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), tongue diagnosis has been an important diagnostic method for the last 3000 years. Tongue diagnosis is a non-invasive, simple and valuable diagnostic tool. TCM treats the tongue coating on a very sensitive scale that reflects physiological and pathological changes in the organs, especially the spleen and stomach. Tongue coating can diagnose disease severity and determine the TCM syndrome (“Zheng” in Chinese). The biological bases of different tongue coating appea… Show more

“…In colorectal cancer, patients who do not respond to chemotherapy usually have a high expression of various ABC transporter pumps, which are located on the cytoplasmic side of the resistant cell membrane, resulting in an increased drug efflux [ 17 ]. In addition, the effectiveness of current chemotherapeutic agents is limited by drug resistance, thus the discovery of the mechanisms governing the cellular response to chemotherapy and develops a new strategy for treatments are priority [ 18 ]. Traditional Chinese prescriptions and formulae can be used as a therapy to effectively control cancer progression, improve quality of life, and prolong survival times instead of conventional chemotherapy [ 19 21 ].…”

“…Gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC‐MS), liquid chromatography‐MS and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry are the most widely used metabolomic methods. Metabolomics has many advantages, including high‐throughput capabilities, high sensitivity and high accuracy . Additionally, metabolomics has greatly aided the prognosis of several diseases …”

“…Although Tongue-coating thickness (TCT) is considered to reflect the progression of a pathological condition (Fei and Gu, 2007;Sun et al, 2013), we did not get any significant difference between thin and thick tongue coating, among idiopathic MN patients. All the patients had histological stage I or II MN, as Bertrand et al reported (Dussol et al, 2008).…”
