Grape berries contain a variety of metabolites, such as anthocyanins, sugars, fatty acids, and antioxidants. Endogenous phytohormones strongly influence these metabolites, which regulate berry quality improvement. In this study, we evaluated the effects of 2,4-epibrassinolide (EBR, brassinolide (BR)-like growth regulator), jasmonic acid (JA), and their signaling inhibitors brassinazole (Brz), and sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DIECA) on berry quality and antioxidant ability. Overall, the pre-harvest application of 0.5 mg L-1 EBR and 100 μmol L-1 JA significantly influences the quality of the grape berry. Results showed that EBR was superior to other treatments at enhancing the content of different metabolites, including anthocyanins, fructose, glucose, and a variety of fatty acids, in grapes. EBR and JA also enhanced the synthesis of gibberellin3 (GA3), cytokinin (CTK), salicylic acid (SA), JA, methyl jasmonate (MeJA), BR, and abscisic acid (ABA), while inhibiting the synthesis of auxin (IAA). Most genes related to BR/JA and anthocyanins/sugars/fatty acids biosynthesis were up-regulated. The effects of Brz and DIECA on the grape berry quality were totally reversed throughout the study, as shown by EBR and JA. According to correlation analysis, EBR and JA have a beneficial positive interaction that promotes the formation of strong coherences in grape berries between ABA/IAA/ZT-fruit expansion, BR/JA/MeJA/GA3/ZR-biochemical characteristics development, JA/MeJA/ABA/GA3/SA/ZR-antioxidant capacity enhancement, and JA/MeJA/IAA/GA3/ZT/ZR-fatty acids accumulation. In this regard, we concluded that preharvest exogenous 0.5 mg L-1 EBR and 100 μmol L-1 JA is a successful way to improve grape berry quality.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are considered as the sixth group of plant growth regulators with significant growth promoting activity in many horticulture and agriculture crops. This phytohormone was discovered from the pollen of Brassica napus L. on the basis of their ability to promote growth. Currently, more than 70 BRs have been isolated from different plant species, but only three viz., Brassinolide (BL), 24-Epibrassinolide (EBL) and 28-Homobrassinolide (HBL) are found to be the most biologically active forms and extensively used in various crops. They are eco-friendly, effective at very low concentration, cost effective and almost always have synergetic effect when interacts with other phytohormones. Owing to diverse physiological roles and cross talk with other hormones influence on plant growth and development, they are being collectively referred as ‘pleiotropic phytohormone’. Although, BRs were discovered towards the end of twentieth century, but the dynamic applications and outcomes were reported mainly during the inception of twenty first century, hence BRs were termed as ‘hormone of the twenty-first century’. The application of BRs at different growth stages have been reported to positively influences such as nutrients uptakes, growth, yield and quality attributes on many fruit crops which includes tropical, sub-tropical and temperate fruit crops at very low concentrations have great roles in terms of growth, yield, fruit quality and stress tolerance mechanisms, which results to lucrative adventure of farming community. This review article will provide an elucidated insight into the application of BR in different fruit crops.

One of the major issues with pomegranate production in arid and semi-arid climate is the white arils of fruit. The known plant regulators abscisic and jasmonic acids play a variety of roles in plant growth and the reduction of abiotic stresses. However, little is known about their application to improve the quality of pomegranate fruit, particularly white arils, in semi-arid environments. Herein, the experiments, in this study, were performed in two consecutive seasons 2020 and 2021 on 10-year-old Wonderful pomegranate trees to spotlight the improvement of the aril coloration and fruit quality by spraying with abscisic and jasmonic acids under semi-arid climatic conditions. Fifteen Wonderful pomegranate trees were subjected to five treatments (three replications for each). The tested treatments included abscisic acid (ABA) at the concentrations of 600 and 800 µg−1 mL, jasmonic acid (JA) at the concentrations of 10 and 15 Mm, and the control treatment (distilled water). The physical and chemical characteristics of the fruit quality of Wonderful pomegranate improved significantly when the trees were treated with abscisic or jasmonic acids. The foliar addition of ABA at 600 and 800 µg−1 mL increased the anthocyanin index by 96.74 and 114.75%, respectively, in the first year and by 49.48 and 67.62% in the second year, in comparison with the control. The foliar addition of ABA at 800 µg−1 mL was more effective than jasmonic acid in enhancing most of the chemical fruit properties, especially the anthocyanin index. The high level of ABA (800 µg−1 mL) gave the minimum fruit acidity and the highest fruit quality. Abscisic acid induces the fruit acidity and enhances the aril coloration in Wonderful pomegranate. In semi-arid conditions, it is recommended to spray the Wonderful pomegranate trees with abscisic acid at 800 µg−1 mL to improve the fruit quality and to increase the aril coloration.
