Importance of microbial natural products and the need to revitalize their discovery

Abstract: Microbes are the leading producers of useful natural products. Natural products from microbes and plants make excellent drugs. Significant portions of the microbial genomes are devoted to production of these useful secondary metabolites. A single microbe can make a number of secondary metabolites, as high as 50 compounds. The most useful products include antibiotics, anticancer agents, immunosuppressants, but products for many other applications, e.g., antivirals, anthelmintics, enzyme inhibitors, nutraceutica… Show more

“…Natural products (NPs) signify large and diverse secondary metabolites with a comprehensive choice of biological activities those have established with their numerous practices, particularly in human and veterinary and also in agriculture [1][2][3]. NPs are derived from microorganisms, marine animals, and also from plant sources.…”

“…These predictions have been confirmed experimentally, 7,8 and generalized to actinomycetes and other bacterial taxa with large genomes. [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] NPs continue to be important sources of new and novel chemical scaffolds for drug discovery, 17,18 and actinomycetes, particularly Streptomyces species, continue to be the most productive sources. 4,19,20 To access the enormous untapped cryptic SM coding capacity of actinomycetes, it is critical to develop robust approaches to activate gene cluster expression.…”

“…[3] The variation of fermentation conditions has been intensively used in order to optimize the production of secondary metabolites in biotechnological processes. [4] Bode et al systematically varied growth conditions in order to induce the formation of diverse secondary metabolites in a selected Streptomyces strain and termed their approach OSMAC (one strain many compounds).…”
