The Impact of Combined Antiretroviral Therapy on Biologic False-Positive Rapid Plasma Reagin Serologies in a Longitudinal Cohort of HIV-Infected Persons

Abstract: The use of cART appears to decrease the odds of BFP RPR tests. This finding suggests that nontreponemal titer fluctuations in persons with HIV may reflect the influence of factors unrelated to syphilis disease activity.

“…For the state of Santa Catarina, 95% of approximately 25% of the remaining Atlantic Rainforest cover is secondary forest [61,62]. The natural resources of secondary forests are important to local communities, and abandonment of fields for forest regeneration does not make them idle and unproductive spaces [63-66].…”

“…All reactive non-treponemal tests were confirmed using treponemal tests, thereby minimizing the risk of false-positive test results. Of note, the use of cART appears to decrease the prevalence of biologic false-positive tests in HIVinfected individuals (31). Also, all patient files were reviewed, enabling us to confirm that seroreactive tests were clinically perceived as a case and to distinguish between relapse and re-infection.…”

“…(The use of darkfield microscopy for the diagnosis of early syphilis using specimens from genital lesions, and the use of PCR testing on these lesions, which is even more sensitive, are rarely performed outside of specialized settings). The reliance on these indirect tests that may not necessarily reflect underlying disease activity has generated significant challenges in the management of syphilis [ 28 ].…”
