Oral supplementation with areca-derived polyphenols attenuates food allergic responses in ovalbumin-sensitized mice

Abstract: BackgroundArecae semen, the dried slice of areca nuts, is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat intestinal parasitosis, rectal tenesmus and diarrhea. Areca nuts contain a rich amount of polyphenols that have been shown to modulate the functionality of mast cells and T cells. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of polyphenol-enriched areca nut extracts (PANE) against food allergy, a T cell-mediated immune disorder.MethodsBALB/c mice were left untreated or administered with PANE (0.05… Show more

“…A. semen has also been reported to induce functional myeloid-derived suppressor cells, primarily responsible for the suppression of T-cell responses. Both extracts have been reported for attenuating the allergic response by increasing gut mucus production, thereby reducing antigen retrieval permeabilization and downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokine levels ( 117 , 118 ). However, A. semen has also been reported for its toxic effects in rats if high doses are administered for extended times which does limits its efficacy if the dose has to be increased for humans ( 134 ).…”

“…Because allergic asthma is a Th2-mediated inflammatory disease, theoretically, substances that exhibit antiinflammatory and/or Th1-skewing properties could potentially be used to ameliorate the disease. Numerous herbs, phytochemicals, and vitamins have been investigated for their interactions with the immune system and used as complementary and alternative medicines in treating atopic disorders (Chang et al 2013 ; Chang et al 2011 ; Hwang et al 2012 ; Lee et al 2012a ; Lee et al 2010 ; Lee et al 2012b ; Mainardi et al 2009 ; Rao et al 2013 ; Wang et al 2013 ). Ganoderma is a medicinal fungus that is considered to be a therapeutic biofactory with numerous pharmacologically active components (Paterson 2006 ).…”

“…In China, AN is a commonly used Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for treating distended abdomen and intestinal parasitosis, tenesmus, diarrhea, etc. (Wang et al 2013). The AN is traditionally processed by stir-baking to yellowish, stir-baking to dark brown or carbonizing by stir-baking to different forms for clinical uses (Xu et al 2015).…”
