“…Most importantly, we observed quinone-like compounds from the vaping of VE and VEA (Figure , Tables S6 and 7, and Figure S2) with 0.89 ± 0.09 μg/mg-diluent of duroquinone (DQ) from VE vaping and 2.45 ± 0.23 μg/mg-diluent of DQ and 12.00 ± 1.10 μg/mg-diluent of durohydroquinone (DHQ) from VEA vaping. Since quinone-like compounds are significant contributors to the generation of reactive oxygen species through redox reaction, they might explain the significant increase of cytotoxicity of VE and VEA vaping samples, acute oxidative stress, and the reported EVALI cases. ,, The presence of DQ and DHQ has been reported in previous studies, , but as far as we know this is the first study to quantify the yield of DQ and DHQ from vaping of VE and VEA. Future studies are warranted to further investigate the role of DQ and DHQ redox couple in cellular oxidative stress and EVALI.…”

“…In the current study using spermatozoa of the common carp, excess ROS led to decreases in sperm motility, velocity, and DNA integrity in a time‐ and dose‐dependent manner. We previously showed that, in the presence of various xenobiotic compounds, both spermatozoa motility and DNA integrity are inversely correlated with indicators of oxidative stress such as lipid oxidation and protein carbonylation (Gazo et al, ; Linhartova et al, ), so DNA fragmentation is a reliable metric of free‐radical mediated damage induced by oxidative stress (Kodoma et al, ).
