Do stosowania niekonwencjonalnych metod terapii skłaniają nie tylko odczuwane dolegliwości, ale także potrzeba zachowania swojego zdrowia na jak najwyższym poziomie. Osoby o wysokim poczuciu odpowiedzialności za własne zdrowie mogą sięgać po terapie niekonwencjonalne, aby zaspokoić potrzebę aktywnego uczestnictwa we wszystkim, co dotyczy ich zdrowia. Cel. Celem badania było określenie związku między stosowaniem niekonwencjonalnych metod terapii a zachowaniami zdrowotnymi osób dorosłych. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono wśród 97 mieszkańców miast i wsi. Wiek badanych wahał się w granicach 18-65 lat. Metodą zastosowaną w badaniu był sondaż diagnostyczny, a narzędziem badawczym kwestionariusz ankiety własnego autorstwa. Wykorzystano także Wielowymiarową Skalę Umiejscowienia Kontroli Zdrowia. Wyniki badań poddano analizie ilościowej i jakościowej. Obliczenia statystyczne przeprowadzono za pomocą programu Statistica 10,0. Wyniki i wnioski. Ponad 50% respondentów stosowało niekonwencjonalne metody terapii, a większość uczestników cechowała się zachowaniami zdrowotnymi i wewnętrznym umiejscowieniem kontroli zdrowia. Nie stwierdzono jednak, by osoby te istotnie częściej stosowały niekonwencjonalne metody terapii. Diseases are not the only reason for using complementary and alternative medicine. It is also a need to maintain your health and physical well-being at the highest level possible. People with a high sense of responsibility for their own health may choose complementary and alternative medicine to meet the need of an active participation in all that concerns their health. Aim. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between complementary and alternative medicine usage and health behaviors of adults. Material and methods. The study was conducted among 97 residents of towns and villages. The age of respondents ranged from 18 to 65 years. The research method was a diagnostic survey and the research tool was a questionnaire of own authorship. Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale was used also. The results were subjected to qualitative and quantitative analysis. Statistical calculations were performed using Statistica 10.0. Results and conclusions. Over 50% of respondents used complementary and alternative medicine and most of the participants were characterized by health behaviors and internal health locus of control. Objectives: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is prevalent, but specific use of CAM across cancer treatment is underinvestigated. The objectives of this study were to assess changes in CAM use across cancer treatment; specific reasons for and satisfaction with specific types of CAM used; and associations of CAM use with stress, mood, and quality of life (QOL) in women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. Design and setting: Seventy-seven women with early-stage breast cancer who underwent active cancer treatment participated in the study. Data were collected three times: shortly after cancer diagnosis and 2 months and 6 months after the start of adjuvant cancer therapy. Outcome measures: CAM Questionnaire, Impact of Event Scale (stress), Profile of Mood State (mood), and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast Cancer (QOL). Results: Mean age was 52.4 years, and 94%-97% of women used on average five to six CAMs across three time points. Women largely started CAM use before cancer diagnosis and continued across cancer treatment. The five most common CAMs were prayer (88.3%), multivitamin use, massage, and vitamins E and C, followed by music, meditation, green tea, chiropractic care, and vitamin A, with little changes in types of CAM use across cancer treatment. Satisfaction was high, and satisfaction with prayer was the highest. Prayer, meditation, and music were used specifically for a feeling of control, whereas vitamins were used to improve the immune system, showing clear patterns. Stress, mood disturbance, and QOL declined significantly over time, p < 0.001-0.04, but the number of CAMs used was unrelated to these variables. Conclusions: CAM use was highly prevalent with multiple CAMs and continued throughout cancer treatment. Prayer was the most common CAM; it had the highest satisfaction rating and the perception of being most helpful. The effect of long-term CAM use requires further investigation on psychological and biobehavioral outcomes with consideration of demographic and clinical characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the most common complementary and alternative medicines used in the treatment of patients with breast cancer. However, the clinical effect of TCM on survival, which is a major concern in these individuals, lacks evidence from large-scale clinical studies. METHODS: The authors used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to conduct a retrospective population-based cohort study of patients with advanced breast cancer between 2001 and 2010. The patients were separated into TCM users and nonusers, and Cox regression models were applied to determine the association between the use of TCM and patient survival. RESULTS: A total of 729 patients with advanced breast cancer receiving taxanes were included in the current study. Of this cohort, the mean age was 52.0 years; 115 patients were TCM users (15.8%) and 614 patients were TCM nonusers. The mean follow-up was 2.8 years, with 277 deaths reported to occur during the 10-year period. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that, compared with nonusers, the use of TCM was associated with a significantly decreased risk of all-cause mortality (adjusted hazards ratio [HR], 0.55 [95% confidence interval, 0.33-0.90] for TCM use of 30-180 days; adjusted HR, 0.46 [95% confidence interval, 0.27-0.78] for TCM use of > 180 days). Among the frequently used TCMs, those found to be most effective (lowest HRs) in reducing mortality were Bai Hua She She Cao, Ban Zhi Lian, and Huang Qi. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the current observational study suggest that adjunctive TCM therapy may lower the risk of death in patients with advanced breast cancer. Future randomized controlled trials are required to validate these findings. Cancer 2014;120:1338-44.
