Measurement of quality of recovery using the QoR-40: a quantitative systematic review

Abstract: The QoR-40 is a widely used and extensively validated measure of quality of recovery. The QoR-40 is a suitable measure of postoperative quality of recovery in a range of clinical and research situations.

“…15 A subsequent evaluation of the psychometric properties of the QoR-40 -from 17 studies in which it was used -concluded that it was a suitable measure. 16 Then again, the QoR-40 was designed to reflect early recovery and normalizes within days to weeks.…”

“…A recent quantitative systematic review and meta-analysis by Gornall et al has shown that the QoR-40 scale is a good-quality measurement tool for assessing the quality of recovery. 12 This scoring system has been validated for many surgical facilities, including neurosurgery. 17 Data represented as mean (SD); CI = confidence interval; SCP = superficial cervical plexus *Opioid consumption is in morphine equivalents (mg)…”

“…Among the multiple tools available to access the quality of recovery after anesthesia and surgery, the 40-item quality of recovery questionnaire (QoR-40) is one of the validated multidimensional tools that has been shown to be suitable to assess the effect of interventions in anesthesia that are aimed at improving the quality of recovery and improving patient satisfaction. 12 The questionnaire measures various dimensions of recovery, including pain, nausea and vomiting, physical independence, physical comfort, emotional state, and psychological support. 12 The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of SCPB on postoperative quality of recovery and analgesia in patients undergoing elective anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.…”

“…Adverse events can generally be observed clinically and/or confirmed from diagnostic tests, whereas recovery can be assessed only from patients using patientreported outcome measures (PROMs) or indirect measures of functional capacity. Patient-reported outcome measures may be assessed using either specific questionnaires quantifying recovery [13][14][15][16][17] or more general questionnaires developed for evaluating health-related quality of life (HRQL). 18 Functional capacity is generally assessed by a standardized measure of physical function (e.g., six-minute walk test).…”
