Global Positioning System Watches for Estimating Energy Expenditure

Abstract: Global positioning system (GPS) watches have been introduced commercially, converting frequent measurements of time, location, speed (pace), and elevation into energy expenditure (EE) estimates. The purpose of this study was to compare EE estimates of 4 different GPS watches (Forerunner, Suunto, Polar, Adeo), at various walking speeds, with EE estimate from a triaxial accelerometer (RT3), which was used as a reference measure in this study. Sixteen healthy young adults completed the study. Participants wore 4 … Show more

“…To the best of our knowledge, no study has systematically examined low-cost GPS receivers' accuracy for such estimations. Although a few studies have used GPS receivers to estimate EE during outdoor walking, none of these studies have included all the required methodological conditions (13,14,22,33). Importantly, the experimental constraint of finding outdoor pathways that include both different grades and sufficient distance to achieve a steady state at different walking speeds can be highly challenging.…”

“…Another example of user customisation and user-generated content offered by products in our survey is MovesCount App Zone, Suunto’s Ambit GPS watches companion app community and apps [19]. These sports apps, although not proper games as such, enable users to customise their GPS watches and to interactively define the parameters of their workout without any programming tools or knowledge.…”

“…96,97 Compared with accelerometers, GPS units significantly underestimate PA (i.e., EE). 98 There have been suggestions to use GPS in combination with HR monitors and accelerometry. 97,99 Multisensor devices utilize multiple physiological and mechanical sensors in combination to improve precision of PA and EE measurements.…”
